Burns Supper - Saturday, 26th January

Once again, the Forest Hill Society in conjunction with All Inn One, on Perry Vale, will be hosting a Burns Supper on Saturday 26th January.

There will be the traditional Address to the Haggis and the opportunity to listen to or to read from the works of Robert Burns. We will also have some local musicians to round off the evening.

The meal is from 7.30pm, and if you'd like to join us you must book in advance, please call the pub on 020 8699 3311 or email info@allinnone.org.uk to book.

The cost is £21.95 per person for 3 courses and a very enjoyable evening. (Please let them know if you would prefer the vegetarian haggis to the meaty version).

Everybody is welcome; members, non-members, Scots, Sassenachs, and all friends of Scotland.

Early booking is recommended as places are limited.

Our Very Own Burns Night 2015!

Since 2009, the Forest Hill Society have celebrated Burns Night in late January and been delighted by the fine food from the Honor Oak and All Inn One pubs, and Canvas & Cream restaurant. In 2015 we will have our Burns Night feast at The Hill Lounge Bar and Kitchen on Dartmouth Road on Saturday 24th January. The Hill have run their own Burns Night ‘bill o’fare’ for a number of years and recently underwent a major refurbishment.

For those of you who are not Scottish (or at least a wee bit Scottish), I should probably explain what it is all about. Robert – or Robbie – Burns is the most famous Scottish poet and his most famous poem is Auld Lang Syne. It is a tradition on Burns night to toast the memory of Robert Burns but... it’s perhaps best not to say too much about his life now as you could find out more on the night (or Wikipedia).

However, Burns Night is not all about Robbie; it is an excuse for some good food, good company, a little alcohol and possibly some poetry, music or even some dancing. While we’re not planning any dancing, we should be able to cater to the other delights of Burns Night. Whatever our backgrounds, we would all undoubtedly enjoy coming together and sharing our common ignorance of Burns and his poetry.

Burns Night party - Fri 25th January

As has become the custom, we will be celebrating Burns Night for our January social event. Everyone is welcome.

The venue this time will be Canvas & Cream (18 London Road, SE23 3HG) and the cost is £19.99 for the traditional three course meal and a wee dram. A vegetarian option will be available. Come along at 7pm as ceremonies will commence at 7:30.

We are arranging a great evening of entertainment for you. There will be the traditional Address to the Haggis and a chance for people to read some of the Bard's poetry as well as a couple of surprises (if everything works out). Feel free to bring along something to read yourself and don't feel shy!

It would be lovely to have as many people from Forest Hill (and Sydenham!) there as possible, so hope to see many of you, new & old to the area, on the night. The event is open to all (sassenachs, members and non-members alike).

There will be the traditional Address to the Haggis and this year a few people will read some poetry. Feel free to bring along something yourself and don't feel shy!

Burns Night

Thursday 26 January (a day late for purists – sorry)

 

Come along to the All Inn One for another great Forest Hill Society Burns Night. A traditional, and fun, evening of addressing the haggis, and then eating it with the usual tasty accompaniments.

We’re also looking for people to get involved in poetry reading on the night (Scottish accents a plus), bagpipe playing and highland dancing.

The Society’s Local History Evening

Thursday 23 February

We’ve arranged for the fabulous Steve Grindlay to give a talk on an aspect of Forest Hill History. What Steve doesn’t know about Forest Hill isn’t worth knowing! Come and join us and learn more about this great place we live in.

 

Exact subject yet to be confirmed, but we’ll update you very soon. Open to all, no booking needed.

 

We need You

Membership to the Forest Hill Society is open to everyone and costs just £5 a year. Benefits include 12 newsletters, 12 local events - most free, assistance with planning proposals, making new friends in the local area and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to have a say about where you live.

 

We're a voluntary group and are always looking for people to help with what we do. We have great plans and we need people to help in a number of ways, most very simple and easy things -

 

• Handing out membership leaflets in your street, or one close by
• Distributing our newsletter four times a year, a chance to see different areas of Forest Hill, or maybe do your own road
• Helping to write articles for the newsletter - either sending your own articles or helping with ones already written
• Helping with leaflet design a few hours a few times a year.
• Helping at events - not all, just one is a help - maybe baking a cake, helping on a stall or posting links on local forums

A Bring and Take event. Bring stuff you no longer want and, in return, take away stuff you do want. You really can get some amazing things - from CDs to clothes to toys to furniture. What’s not to like?

23 Club - January Scottish Special

Friday, 23rd January, Honor Oak Pub, 1 St German's Road, SE23 1RH, 0208-690-8606, 8pm - Burns Night.

The 23rd January is close-enough to Burns Night for it to be an excuse to celebrate it. We're very grateful to Jamie at the Honor Oak for arranging this alongside our very own Rob McIntosh who's managed to persuade his father to address the haggis for us.

Jamie is offering a free starter plate of Haggis, Neeps n' Tatties for anyone who calls and books in the name of the 23 Club. After that, you can choose your main courses from the pub's excellent menu.

Kilts are not obligatory but it might be nice to see one or two on the night!

This looks like being a well attended event, so do get in there quick so we can make arrangements for a suitably sized table.

There is an outside chance of a malt whisky tasting after the meal.

Remember that the 23 Club is a social club with a difference. It aims to bring local residents together, particularly members of the Forest Hill Society (you can always join on the night), but also supports our many and varied local hostelries that badly need our support this year. Individuals book directly with the venue, mentioning they're with the 23 Club. Everyone pays for their own food and drink. See you there!

We're planning more outdoor events for the Spring when we're feeling a little warmer so watch this space.
